How to Ship Your Catch Home from Key West
By Gulfstream Fishing
You just had an incredible day on the water. The cooler is full of yellowtail snapper, maybe a grouper or two, and now the question hits: How do I get this fish back home?
Good news-you've got options. Here's everything you need to know about getting your Key West catch to your dinner table, whether you're driving, flying, or shipping.
💡
Our #1 Recommendation: Eat your catch the same night you catch it! Nothing beats fresh-off-the-boat fish at one of Key West's amazing hook & cook restaurants.
Option 1: Eat It Fresh (The Best Option)
Let's be honest - the absolute best way to enjoy your catch is to eat it the same day. Key West has several restaurants that will cook your catch for you, prepared exactly how you like it. The fish doesn't get any fresher than that.
After your trip with Gulfstream, we'll clean and fillet your catch for you. From there, you can take it straight to a local restaurant and have it prepared grilled, blackened, fried, or any way you prefer.
✅
Why same-day is best: Maximum freshness and flavor, no shipping hassles or costs, no risk of spoilage, and it creates a memorable Key West dining experience you'll never forget!
Option 2: Flying Home with Your Catch
Yes, you can absolutely take frozen fish on an airplane! The TSA allows frozen fish in both carry-on and checked bags-it just needs to be properly packed.
What you need:
- A sturdy cooler (hard-sided works best for checked bags)
- Frozen gel ice packs (these are TSA-approved)
- Plastic bags to prevent any leaks
- Newspaper or packing material for insulation
Pro tips for flying with fish:
- Freeze your fillets solid the night before your flight
- Use frozen gel packs, not loose ice (ice melts and can be problematic)
- Double-bag everything in sealed plastic bags
- Pack the cooler tight-less air means better insulation
- Carry-on is actually preferred for smaller quantities since you control the handling
Where to get supplies locally:
Stop by any of the local grocery stores, bait shops, or sporting goods stores in Key West. You'll find coolers, ice packs, and packing supplies readily available. Don't wait until the last minute-grab your supplies the day before you fly.
ℹ️
TSA Note: Frozen fish with frozen ice packs are permitted through security. If the ice packs have melted and become liquid, they're subject to the 3.4oz liquid rule. Keep everything frozen solid!
Option 3: Shipping via FedEx or UPS
If you've got a big haul or prefer not to deal with lugging a cooler through the airport, shipping is a solid option. We don't offer shipping services ourselves, but our friends at Fins Dive Center do! They can handle packing and shipping your catch for you - just bring them your fillets and they'll take care of the rest.
Local Pro Tip: Fins Dive Center has been shipping fish for Keys anglers for years. They know exactly how to pack it so it arrives fresh and frozen. Highly recommended if you want a hassle-free experience!
If you prefer to DIY, you can easily handle it on your own:
How to ship fish home:
1. Get a styrofoam shipping cooler - Available at local stores or shipping locations
2. Pack with frozen gel packs - Surround the frozen fish completely
3. Use overnight or 2-day shipping - Fish and ice packs will stay frozen for about 48 hours max
4. Ship early in the week - Avoid weekend delays; Monday-Wednesday shipments are ideal
Local FedEx & UPS locations in Key West:
Both FedEx and UPS have drop-off locations in Key West. You can also schedule a pickup from your hotel. Expect to pay $50-150+ for overnight shipping depending on the weight and destination.
⚠️
Don't ship on Thursday or Friday! Weekend delays can leave your fish sitting in a warehouse for days. Always ship Monday through Wednesday for best results.
What We Recommend
💡
Our honest take after 75+ years: Eat it fresh at a local restaurant that same evening. Nothing beats fish that was swimming just hours ago!
If you must bring it home:
1. Second choice: Fly home with a small cooler as carry-on
2. Third choice: Ship overnight via FedEx/UPS for larger quantities
The reality is, fish tastes best fresh. The logistics of shipping or transporting fish can be a hassle, and nothing compares to sitting down to a meal of fish you caught just hours ago, prepared by a skilled chef, with a cold drink in hand and the Key West sunset in front of you.
