Conditions: Late hurricane season — couple of weather days early, then beautiful weeks. Water temp 79–82°F. Mostly E wind 8–12 kts.
October felt like a switch flipped mid-month. The first cool nights pulled water temps down a couple of degrees and the cero mackerel showed up in numbers we hadn't seen all summer. The chum slick had ceros, yellowtails, and the occasional kingfish all in the same column.
Deeper structure trips picked up a few quality blackfin tuna and the lane snapper bite started picking up on the patches as fall pushed in.
October is when wire leaders start earning their keep again. If you fished all summer with straight fluoro, time to switch back — those mackerel will cut you off in a heartbeat.
