    The Month in Review

    March 12, 2026 — Lanes were thick. This colorful lane snapper came up from 35 ft on a small chunk of squid on a double-hook bottom rig. We got into them this trip — fish on most drops once the boat settled on the bottom.

    March was the lane snapper show. We got into them mid-month — quality 1–2 lb fish coming up two and three at a time on double-hook bottom rigs, with coolers filling steadily on the patches in 30–45 ft. Best bite came on the slack between tide changes when the boat sat tight on the bottom.

    Mid-month also gave us a tease of what was coming — grouper season was still closed but the bite on the hard bottom was on. We had a couple of solid black grouper and a nice red grouper come up that all had to swim back home. Painful to release, but a good sign of what was waiting for opening day.

    Kingfish hung around all month on the deeper reef edge, ceros started showing in the slick more often, and the yellowtail bite ticked up noticeably in the back half of the month as water temps climbed past 73°F. A few cobia came over the rail off the wrecks too.

    Mid-March 2026 — A bruiser black grouper that came up out of 45 ft on a live pinfish a few weeks before the season reopened. Quick photo and back over the rail to grow some more. Heartbreaker, but the right call.

    Mid-March 2026 — Another tease. This thick red grouper ate a chunk of cut bait on the bottom and got a quick photo before swimming back down. Fish like this are exactly why opening day on May 1 was so worth the wait.

    Captain's Tip

    When the lanes are stacked up, downsize to a #1 long-shank hook and a small chunk of cut squid. You'll outfish the bigger baits 3-to-1 and load the cooler in a hurry.
