Explore the Deep: Multi-Day Fishing Adventures with Yankee Capts

yankee capts key west

If you’re looking for a serious offshore adventure, Yankee Capts’ multi-day trips are where the real action happens. These trips give you a chance to fish deep waters in the Gulf of Mexico and come home with stories—and coolers—full of incredible catches.

Fishing the Gulf Since 2012

Yankee Capts has been running deep water trips into the Gulf every summer since 2012. But the crew’s drive to explore new fishing grounds goes all the way back to 1977. From Georges Bank and the Gulf of Maine to the Dry Tortugas and beyond, Yankee Capts has never stopped chasing what’s next.

Meet Capt. Greg Mercurio – One of the Best in the Game

If you’ve ever fished with Captain Greg Mercurio, you already know he’s more than just a boat captain—he’s got a sixth sense for fishing. I’ve seen him make a small change in course based purely on instinct, and boom—every rod on the boat is bent. His ability to read the ocean and trust his gut is something you don’t come across often.

Greg’s been running this boat for over 30 years, and it shows. He’s calm, steady, and 100% focused on getting people on fish. His crew follows his lead—professional, helpful, and upbeat, even when the conditions get tough. Whether you’re an experienced angler or brand new to deep drops, you’ll feel taken care of. Fishing with Greg just feels different—in the best way.

Because these Pulley Ridge trips rely on perfect weather windows, Capt. Greg may change the plan if the seas demand it. He always puts safety first, and frankly, you’re going to want him making that call.

Where You’ll Be Fishing

These trips take you to remote waters west and north of the Pulley Ridge HAPC—including the Western Ridge. You’ll be fishing in depths between 300 and 900 feet, targeting fish most people only dream of catching.

We’re talking red and scamp grouper, mutton and blackfin snapper, yelloweye snapper, queen snapper, and on the deep drops—blueline and golden tilefish, snowy and yellowedge grouper, warsaw grouper, blackbelly rosefish, and more. On past trips, we’ve landed up to 24 different species.

This is for folks who want to fish beyond the Dry Tortugas—way out where the bottom’s alive and the action is wild.

Jigging by Day, Tuna by Night

During the day, you’ll deep drop with heavy jigs or baits, drifting over productive bottom. The fish out here love vertical jigging, and it’s common to hook multiple types of grouper and snapper in a single drop.

When the sun sets, the action doesn’t stop. You’ll switch to drifting or anchoring with bait for mutton snapper, snowy grouper, queen snapper, tile fish and blackfin tuna. If you’re still up for jigging after dark, blackfin will keep your arms sore and your cooler full.

Be Ready to Work

This isn’t a lazy drift with a cold drink kind of trip. You’ll be working for your bites—paying attention to your gear, checking your rigs, and dropping deep. But trust me, the payoff is worth it. These are fish you don’t see on half-day trips, and you’ll earn every single one.

Bring the Right Gear

Pulley Ridge trips have a very specific tackle requirement list—and rental gear is not available. Make sure you’ve got everything you need before you book. Double-check the gear list on the Yankee Capts tackle page and reach out with questions if you’re unsure.

Also, make sure to read over the Purchasing and Cancellation Policies so you’re squared away before securing your spot.

Bottom line: If you want a real offshore experience—serious depth, big fish, and one of the best captains in the game—this trip delivers. Book early, pack your tackle, and get ready to fish the edge of the map.
